Her Thoughts on Counseling

Counseling is the essential therapy we all need in life through different phases. While we experience new situations and come across different people it is natural for us to often feel a turmoil of thoughts and emotions. These if remain unexpressed or unresolved may lead to various physical or emotional concerns.

Counseling is the process through which we understand our own self better and develop skills to understand and deal with those around us in different environment. Counseling provides with a safe place to unravel the turmoil within us with the help of counselor, who is essentially a professional in the field of psychology. A counselor listens without any bias or judgement and helps you discover healthy ways of dealing and overcoming your concerns.

Why I Chose Counseling?

I believe counseling is an essential need for everyone and having experienced some difficult incidents at an early age in life, I realized it's importance even more. While I always had underlying interest in human behaviour and emotions, my own experiences and struggle motivated me to choose psychology as my profession.

When I experienced the loss of my mother while I was a teenager, I remember how I struggled to return back to my routine and relationships. I still remember how one of my friend once remarked while trying to help me during one of my unexpected crying spells, "I know you are not okay, but I really don't know how to help you. I would have rushed you to a doctor myself, if you were experiencing physical pain but I really don't know how to soothe this pain for you." While it didn't make me feel better at that moment I knew at least she was being honest unlike the others who sympathized but just kept repeating that I would be fine with time.

This one incident hit me really hard wherein I realized how we even children are taught in school how to deal with physical injuries and pain, yet when it comes to emotional struggles and pain even adults are clueless and prefer to just dismiss them rather than resolving them. I felt the need to look for help myself and that was when I discovered that we do have professionals who can help us overcome emotional pain and struggles and that it is as real as physical pain.

Therapy Style

Various psychotherapies have been formulated from different schools of psychology and I believe that their effectiveness depends on the nature of client and concern. I prefer using an eclectic approach of therapies such as Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Positive Psychotherapy, Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy and Gestalt Therapy. I believe any psychological concern has multiple aspects such as cognition, affect, behaviour and the environment which play a role in the distress of the individual hence it is important that we deal with all these aspects simultaneously. Identifying and understanding the concern, it's cause and impact and then planning how we can overcome it are the three basic steps that I follow using various techniques of psychotherapy.

Concerns Close To My Heart

I believe that no emotional concern is big or small in itself and concerns may manifests differently for different individuals. I feel a close connect with those trying to adjust to a new environment or are experiencing conflicts in relationships with family or friends.

How I Handle Stress

Stress I believe is inevitable, yet distress can be prevented and dealt with. I like to identify what I am feeling and then choose a way accordingly. If I feel like escaping, I relieve myself by going on a good long walk, if I feel emotionally overwhelmed, I like taking a dip into the pool and enjoy a swim to let all my emotions flow along the water, if I feel bombarded by thoughts I like to pen them done in a story form. I like discovering new ways to deal with distress and when I do not have any materialistic resource I help myself with positive affirmations.
